Creating Traditional Sarees Using Jamini Roy's Artwork with Lucknow Chikankari Embroidery - A Blend of Textile Heritage and Folk Art
India possesses a rich and diverse cultural heritage, with embroidery serving as an important form of artistic and textile expression. Among India’s traditional crafts, Lucknow Chikankari is renowned for its intricate hand embroidery and distinctive craftsmanship. This study explores the creative fusion of traditional Lucknow Chikankari with the folk-inspired visual language of Indian artist Jamini Roy to develop innovative contemporary saree designs. The study adopts a modular design approach that integrates Chikankari embroidery with Roy’s characteristic folk-inspired motifs, simplified forms, bold outlines, and indigenous visual vocabulary. Selected elements from Roy’s paintings were interpreted and translated into embroidered motifs suitable for traditional saree garments. The design process involved examining the motifs, techniques, aesthetic principles, and cultural characteristics of both artistic traditions and identifying areas of visual and conceptual harmony. The resulting fashion collection demonstrates how traditional embroidery and modernist folk art can be integrated to create a distinctive contemporary aesthetic while retaining their cultural identity. The study highlights the potential of experimental textile design to reinterpret Indian heritage through innovative surface ornamentation and artistic storytelling. By combining the intricate craftsmanship of Chikankari with Jamini Roy’s expressive folk-inspired imagery, the research presents the saree as a dynamic medium for cultural preservation, creative experimentation, and contemporary fashion innovation.
