Evaluation of Injectable Vitamin D3 Administration Effect on the Rate of Orthodontic Tooth Movement and Root Resorption with CBCT – A Clinico-Radiological Study

Objectives: To investigate the efficiency of injectable vitamin D3 on the rate of tooth movement and the assessment of root resorption. Material and Methods: A prospective split-mouth study was carried out involving 28 orthodontic patients who required bilateral canine retraction. Each patient acted as their own control, with one side receiving injectable vitamin D3 and the other undergoing conventional retraction. vitamin D3 was administered at baseline, 1 month, and 3 months. Canine movement was measured using a digital vernier caliper, while root resorption was evaluated using Cone beam computed tomography statistical package for the social sciences (CBCT SPSS). Data were assessed using paired t -tests with p <0.05. Result: This split-mouth prospective study evaluated injectable vitamin D3 on orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) and root resorption. Tooth movement increased significantly over three months in both arches, with greater movement in the maxilla. Lesser root resorption was seen at baseline but increased after treatment, predominantly in maxillary teeth. Vitamin D3 effectively accelerated tooth movement with arch-dependent resorptive effects. Conclusion: Injectable vitamin D3 accelerated OTN in both arches, with significantly faster movement in the maxilla than the mandible. The increased maxillary movement was associated with greater root resorption, whereas mandibular teeth showed slower movement and fewer resorptive changes. “These findings emphasize the need for arch-specific force application and careful monitoring to ensure efficient and biologically safe treatment.
