The impact of artificial intelligence on legal practice: enhancing the work of lawyers
The rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has renewed debates about its implications for the legal profession, professional responsibility, and legal service delivery. Rather than replacing lawyers, AI is positioned as a complementary tool that automates repetitive and administrative tasks, enabling practitioners to focus on legal analysis, strategic decision-making, advocacy, and client representation. This study employs a systematized qualitative literature review covering academic publications, legal databases, policy documents, and professional reports from 2015 to 2025 to examine how AI is reshaping legal work. The review evaluates emerging opportunities, legal and ethical challenges, and the evolving role of future lawyers. Particular attention is given to accountability, confidentiality, professional responsibility, algorithmic bias, transparency, and the regulatory frameworks governing AI-assisted practice. Findings indicate that AI holds substantial potential to enhance efficiency, accessibility, and quality in legal services. However, the normative reasoning, ethical judgment, and professional discretion central to legal decision-making remain beyond the capabilities of AI systems. The study concludes that AI should be understood as an augmentation rather than a substitute for lawyers. Effective integration of AI into legal practice requires comprehensive ethical guidelines, standardized regulations, and continuous oversight to ensure technological progress does not undermine core principles of the legal profession or judicial processes.
