Organic Synthesis Laboratory Challenge: From d -Mannitol to Chiral Building Blocks through Selective Protection and Deprotection
Abstract We report a challenge-based laboratory activity designed to introduce undergraduate students to the synthesis of chiral building blocks from d-mannitol. This three-day module combines practical tasks─including reaction setup, synthesis, and purification─with theoretical exercises to build proficiency in organic synthesis with a specific focus on stereochemistry and symmetry. By establishing a synergy between competition and teamwork, the format encouraged students to deeply assimilate the underlying chemical principles. The team-based approach to solving practical and theoretical problems was highly effective, stimulating collaborative learning and rigorous discussion, leading to a hands-on proficient learning approach.
