The Peacock Angel of Yazidi, the Seven, and all seeing eye of providence Divine Sight

Sultan Zeshan, Yazidism has repeatedly been described through categories imposed from outside the tradition, most destructively through the accusation of “devil worship.” This article reconstructs Yazidi belief from its oral sacred literature, scholarly documentation of qewls and prayers, ritual practice, and the theology of the Heft Sur, the Seven Holy Beings led by Tawûsî Melek. It then places the peacock, the number seven, and motifs of sacred sight within a controlled comparative field. The comparison includes the peacock feather of Krishna, the Simurgh and seven valleys of Farid al-Din Attar’s Conference of the Birds, Iranian heptadic traditions, Qur’anic sevenfold cosmology, Biblical sevens, and the historically variable systems now popularly summarized as the seven chakras. Similarity is treated as a comparative datum, not as proof of common origin. A separate Qur’an-only reading examines Iblis through the commands to prostrate before Adam, the declaration “I am better than him,” Qur’an 18:50’s identification of Iblis as a jinn, and the semantic field associated with b-l-s. The article argues that the Qur’anic narrative centers refusal of divine command, rank comparison, arrogance, and rebellion. It does not name al-Dajjāl, and it does not itself establish the later polemical equation of Tawûsî Melek with Satan. The article also distinguishes the Qur’an’s language of divine sight and “My eye/Our eyes” from later one-eyed Antichrist traditions. Finally, it traces how the “devil-worshipper” accusation entered anti-Yazidi polemic and was mobilized by ISIS in a genocidal campaign. The result is not a claim that Yazidism, Hinduism, Persian Sufi poetry, Qur’anic theology, and yogic subtle-body systems are one religion. It is an argument for disciplined comparison, internal religious description, and textual precision before theological judgment.
