Composite homograft in a pediatric patient with prosthetic aortic valve endocarditis
A composite aortic homograft was used in a 14-year-old patient with prosthetic aortic valve endocarditis. There were severe prosthesis-patient mismatch and active infection confirmed by Staphylococcus aureus isolation. Redo surgery implied removal of infected prosthesis, debridement and implantation of a cryopreserved composite homograft. Postoperative period was characterized by normal homograft function, relief of infection and significant clinical improvement without the need for lifelong anticoagulation. Homograft demonstrated high efficacy in complex clinical scenario.
