A Speculative Hypothesis About Light, Spacetime, and Propulsion
Abstract This note records a speculative hypothesis concerning the fundamental nature of light, spacetime, and propulsion. Light propagates through vacuum at the invariant speed c, and modern physics describes photons as excitations of the electromagnetic field. The present hypothesis asks whether there may be a deeper physical structure, constituent, field, or property underlying light that has not yet been experimentally identified. The central intuition is that the unusual ability of light to propagate through spacetime at c may reflect a deeper compatibility between this underlying physical property and the structure of spacetime itself. If such a deeper structure exists, identifying and learning to manipulate it could potentially provide a new approach to propulsion. This hypothesis does not claim that photons have been proven to contain a smaller material constituent, nor does it claim that faster-than-light travel is currently possible. It proposes a question for future theoretical and experimental investigation: whether the physical mechanism underlying lightlike propagation could eventually be understood and technologically exploited in a way fundamentally different from accelerating ordinary massive matter. Related concepts concerning photon substructure, quantum fields, vacuum properties, and the fundamental origin of the speed of light have been explored in existing scientific literature. The purpose of this record is to document the author's particular conceptual formulation and line of reasoning as of 6 October 2026.
