Visualising and Theorising Physical Activity Through Photography and Sociology: Reflections on a Collaborative Interdisciplinary Teaching Initiative

This article considers interdisciplinary collaboration in higher education. We reflect on a pilot project teaching across the Departments of Kinesiology and Art and Design at California State University Northridge in the United States. Two final-year online courses in sports sociology and photography were combined over a four-week period. Students were combined into one class, and interaction across disciplines was required. Students engaged in new materials from both disciplines. We argue for the need for kinesiology and art to consider cross-disciplinary collaboration and reflect on our experience.

Abstract

This article considers interdisciplinary collaboration in higher education. We reflect on a pilot project teaching across the Departments of Kinesiology and Art and Design at California State University Northridge in the United States. Two final-year online courses in sports sociology and photography were combined over a four-week period. Students were combined into one class, and interaction across disciplines was required. Students engaged in new materials from both disciplines. We argue for the need for kinesiology and art to consider cross-disciplinary collaboration and reflect on our experience.
