Multi-scenario optimization of fuel distribution transportation using goal programming

Inefficient distribution routes of oil could lead to supply deficits and increased costs. Several goal programming models were developed in this study to determine an optimal distribution model for fuel oil transportation using goal programming that meets target demand while optimizing capacity, time, and cost. Data were obtained through sources directly involved in operational performance. A total of four scenarios reflecting variations in demand and route use were evaluated. The optimization results showed increased fuel fulfilment by 1,033 KL; 2,533 KL; 1,378 KL; 3,973 KL for Scenario 1 to 4, respectively. Also, the average travel time and distribution cost per litre were significantly reduced across all scenarios. The findings demonstrate that multi objective goal programming models enable in providing strategic allocation of transport resources in the networks of fuel-distribution. Moreover, implications for logistics managers include prioritizing route efficiency and modelling trade-offs between fulfilment, time, and cost in dynamic supply-chain nature.
