INDICATIONS FOR REMOVAL OF A PORT SYSTEM IN A PATIENT WITH SUSPECTED SEPTICEMIA IN THE ABSENCE OF OTHER LOCAL SOURCES OF INFECTION.
The integrity of the skin is compromised during the placement of various implantable devices (arterial and venous catheters, port systems, tracheostomies, cholangiostomies, nephrostomies). Currently, there are no materials used for these devices that are completely biologically inert. Microorganisms adhere to their surfaces, forming individual colonies that relatively quickly (within 24 hours) develop into a continuous biofilm. Most microorganisms within the biofilm remain in a dormant state; however, localized foci of proliferation periodically arise, leading to the development of an infectious process.
