INTEGRATING RENEWABLE ENERGY SOLUTIONS IN HOUSING DEVELOPMENTS FOR ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY IN DELTA STATE NIGERIA; A CASE STUDY OF NDOKWA EAST AND ISOKO NORTH.

This study assessed renewable energy integration in housing developments in Delta State, Nigeria. The study focused on Ndokwa East and Isoko North Local Government Areas. It examined adoption, influencing factors, benefits, challenges, and strategies for integration. A cross-sectional survey design was used with a quantitative research approach. Data were collected from 100 purposively selected respondents in both study areas. Structured questionnaires were used to collect the primary data. The data were analyzed using SPSS software. Descriptive statistics and Principal Component Analysis were used for the analysis. Findings showed different levels of renewable energy adoption across both study areas. Isoko North recorded higher adoption of mini-grids and hybrid renewable energy systems. Ndokwa East recorded higher adoption of solar home and security systems. Battery storage systems had low adoption levels in both study areas. Financing, awareness, regulations, technical skills, policies, and income influenced adoption. Renewable energy improved electricity reliability and environmental sustainability in the study areas. It also improved property attractiveness and reduced household electricity costs. Renewable energy integration also created possible employment opportunities. Major challenges included limited technical skills and poor maintenance support. Limited awareness and financial constraints were also major challenges. The study recommends early solar integration during housing planning and design. It also recommends stronger financing and public-private partnerships. Public awareness programs and technical training are further recommended
