Towards Vibrant Urban Spaces: A Sustainable Humanizing Placemaking (SHP) Framework
Abstract - This study aims to discuss the process of placemaking as a human-centered approach to sustainabilityand to humanize cities, and to present a novel, holistic framework that integrates diverse prior approaches to createvibrant, humanizing urban spaces. The research employs multiple methods to achieve its objectives, including acomprehensive literature review, bibliometric analysis, and comparative case studies. The proposed frameworkbuilds on community participation development, aiming to merge the concepts of placemaking, sustainability, andhumanizing cities into a single, integrative framework. While previous research has mainly focused on the physicalaspects of placemaking, this study addresses a critical gap: the fragmented nature of existing models which oftenoverlook the integration of technological innovation and sustainability principles within human-centered design. The SHP framework uniquely bridges this gap by incorporating renewable energy monitoring and digital identityelements alongside traditional social and aesthetic dimensions. The framework provides both the predesign of newurban spaces and the renovation of existing environments, grounded in four interconnected approaches:social, cultural, environmental, and economic, that illustrate how Sustainable Human-centered Placemaking (SHP) canenhance urban life. The findings highlight the framework’s potential to foster ownership, belonging, and well-being,while advancing sustainable and humanizing cities development. Furthermore, further empirical testing andpractical validation of the findings are needed. Ultimately, this holistic framework serves as a strategic referencefor specialists and decision-makers aiming to activate user engagement in urban spaces, while promoting theintegration of sustainability and city humanizing strategies into contemporary urban contexts.
