Comparative Evaluation of Serum Vitamin D Levels in Patients with Erosive Lichen Planus & Reticular Lichen Planus : A Hospital Based Prospective Study
AbstractBackground: Oral Lichen Planus (OLP) is a chronic immune-mediated mucocutaneous disorder with varied clinical presentations, notably erosive (symptomatic) and reticular (asymptomatic) forms. Emerging evidence suggests a role of Vitamin D in immune modulation and inflammatory pathways.Aim: To compare serum Vitamin D levels among patients with erosive OLP, reticular OLP, and healthy controls.Materials and Methods: A hospital based prospective study was conducted with 30 participants divided into three groups: erosive OLP (n=10), reticular OLP (n=10), and healthy controls (n=10). Serum 25-hydroxy Vitamin D levels were measured using chemiluminescent microparticle immunoassay (CMIA). Psychosomatic assessment was performed using the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS). Statistical analysis was carried out using SPSS version 21.Results: Based on previous and recent evidence, Vitamin D levels are expected to be significantly lower in OLP patients, particularly in erosive forms, compared to reticular forms and controls. Conclusion: Vitamin D deficiency may play a significant role in the pathogenesis and severity of OLP and may serve as a potential prognostic biomarker.
