Advancements in Natural Language Processing: Implications, Challenges, and Future Directions
Abstract—Natural Language Processing or NLP started with rule-based systems and basic statistical methods, now itincludes machine learning, deep learning and transformer-based models. This study looks at how these changes haveimpacted text processing. The focus is on areas like preprocessing how text is represented supervised learning, modellingcontext and adapting to different domains. This review draws from studies in healthcare, social media, news, finance, education and privacy-preserving learning. These fields show patterns in methods used and shared challenges. Study isare carried on the practices, data quality, privacy concerns, computing needs, language coverage and how easy it is tounderstand model decisions. One important point is the link between model complexity and what the task requires. Forsmaller-scale tasks older simpler models can still work well. When dealing with more complex language, contextual andgenerative models are needed. These newer models can capture a range of language behaviours. The way datasets arebuilt domain- terms how results are tested whether experiments can be repeated and human involvement all play a bigrole. These factors affect real-world performance as much as the model itself.
