The Shifting Narrative of a Scottish Sandstorm in Time
This work explores the shifting narrative of the Culbin disaster, a series of storm events in 1694 that caused severe damage to a local community, with attention to the changes of that narrative over time. It highlights several major themes including how the human element of Culbin, despite being documented in the first accounts of the events, has come and gone from the narrative, the emphasis on the storm itself, the spiritual element of early modern disasters, the power of nature, Culbin as a symbol of triumph, and anxieties of climate change. Culbin serves as a long-term study of a disaster and explores how people chose to remember it.
