Reimagining Inclusion Through NEP 2020: Learning for All

National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 represents a revolutionary reform in the Indian education system with an objective of making it more equitable, inclusive and learner-oriented. One of the key principles of the policy is inclusive education that focuses on providing equal education opportunities to all learners irrespective of their socio-economic background, gender, disability, language, geographical region, or cultural identity. The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 reflects values of equality and social justice that form a part of constitution and SDG-4 that seeks to provide inclusive and equitable quality education to all learners. This paper analyzes provisions of NEP 2020 and its recommendations with respect to inclusive education. Qualitative document analysis approach has been used to analyze policy recommendations, ways of implementation and implications of implementation on building an inclusive educational system. Provisions in the policy have been made with respect to equitable access to education, inclusive curriculum, teacher education, gender inclusion, education of children with disabilities, multilingual education, digital inclusion and institutional reforms. Strengths and weaknesses of NEP 2020 have been analyzed along with implementation challenges. The research shows that although NEP 2020 offers a robust structure for promoting inclusive education, its success will require proper financial investment, preparedness of teachers, infrastructural developments, multi-sectoral collaboration and monitoring of its recommendations. Effective implementation of NEP 2020 recommendations can make a great contribution towards ensuring equitable and quality education in India.
