An Epidemiological Approach to Studying Individual Diseases in a Community: A Review Article Based on a Rural Health Survey in a Local Village in Kumarganj
Abstract Epidemiology is the systematic study of health-related events and diseases within a specific population and helps identify patterns, causes, and preventive strategies for illnesses affecting communities. This review article presents and discusses findings from a community health survey conducted in a village in Kumarganj, a rural setting, to analyse prevalent health conditions, including diabetes, high blood pressure (hypertension), tuberculosis, polio, anaemia, and vitamin A deficiency. A structured questionnaire was used as the primary tool for gathering information from villagers aged 21 to 95 years. The village of Kumarganj was divided into four zones (North, South, East, and West), and the area was assessed and surveyed. A random sampling technique was adopted to select participants of varied age groups and socio-economic backgrounds. The survey found anaemia in 22% and vitamin A deficiency in 26% of individuals, hypertension in 26%, diabetes in 15%, and tuberculosis in 7%, while no polio cases (0%) were identified. The findings highlight nutrition-related and lifestyle-related health issues as major concerns and underline the need for continued health education, improved nutrition, regular health check-ups, and preventive care strategies to uplift the overall health status of the rural community.
