Review on Clerodendrum Infortunatum Linn., A Source for the Drug Bhandira

Clerodendrum infortunatum Linn. (Bhandira) is an important medicinal plant used in Ayurveda for treating fever, skin diseases, wounds, asthma, diabetes, inflammation, and helminthiasis. Methods: Information was collected from Ayurvedic texts, floras, ethnomedicinal reports, and published pharmacological studies to review its morphology, phytochemistry, therapeutic uses, and pharmacological activities. Results: The plant contains flavonoids, saponins, sterols, glycosides, terpenoids, and phenolic compounds. Studies have demonstrated antimicrobial, antioxidant, analgesic, hepatoprotective, anticonvulsant, anthelmintic, and wound-healing activities. In Ayurveda, Bhandira possesses Tikta and Katu rasa, Ushna virya, and Katu vipaka with Deepana, Pachana, Krimighna, and Jwaraghna properties. Discussion: Traditional uses and pharmacological evidence indicate that Clerodendrum infortunatum Linn. has significant therapeutic potential. Further clinical studies are needed to validate its medicinal applications.
