Kata kunci: cerpen; dekadensi moral; struktur kepribadian; Legetang; psikoanalisis This study is motivated by the phenomenon of moral decadence and extreme psychological tension preceding the catastrophic disappearance of Legetang Hamlet in 1955. The purpose of this study is to analyze the personality structure of the characters that triggers the moral decline in Maria Etty’s short story “Legetang.” The method used is descriptive qualitative with the reading note-taking data collection technique. The results show that the dynamics of the characters’ personality structure based on Sigmund Freud’s (1961) psychoanalytic theory are dominated by an uncontrolled id. This is apparent in the characters of Leha and Parlan, who prioritize the fulfillment of material desires and biological lust, while their ego actively justifies these amoral actions. On the other hand, the Father character, as a representation of the superego, experiences absolute powerlessness in controlling social morality, which is worsened by the collective overflow of the villagers’ id impulses through drunkenness and malicious gossip. The short story “Legetang” emphasizes that the imbalance of personality structures collectively can result in the collapse of social civilization. These findings underline the importance of literary psychology as a means of reflecting on the moral dynamics of social life. Keywords: inner conflict; Legetang; personality structure; psychoanalysis; short story
