The Oyneg Shabes Communist: Yehuda Feld and Communist Yiddish culture in the Warsaw Ghetto
This article exposes the convergence of Jewish cultural resistance and Communist political resistance under Nazism. It explores the struggle to produce communist culture in Yiddish, through the biography of Yehuda Feld (1906–1942), the creator of communist illegal press in the Warsaw Ghetto. A linguistic and political analysis of his pre-war and wartime writings demonstrates that communist Yiddish was not merely a pragmatic medium of propaganda, but a culturally embedded political language reflecting the continued Jewish social rootedness of a cohort of communist activists – a distinct cultural phenomenon for which the article coins the term ‘Communist Yiddish culture.
