The Società di linguistica italiana (SLI)
The Società di Linguistica Italiana – SLI is the oldest linguistic society in Italy; it was founded in 1967, thanks to the cooperation between Robert A Hall Jr. and a few other American linguists and some Italian linguists and language teachers, above all Tullio De Mauro. SLI’s main characteristics are its openness to all people and research traditions and its interdisciplinary approach to the study of language. Its annual conferences and publications have favored contact between linguists of all orientations both in Italy and abroad. The Society, particularly through Giscel, a group bringing together scholars and school teachers, also operates to enhance the quantity and quality of language education in Italy at all levels, from kindergarten to University and beyond.
