Why Do French Fries Seem Unhealthy? -- How Are Our Perceptions of Food and Health Formed? --
Why do French fries seem unhealthy? French fries are often regarded as a representative example of unhealthy food. Yet their main ingredient is simply the potato. Similar foods such as potato chips and croquettes can also involve frying potatoes in oil, while carrying somewhat different health-related images. This short paper explores how we perceive food as “healthy” or “unhealthy,” considering not only nutritional characteristics but also cooking methods, eating contexts, cultural associations, and food categories. Rather than deciding whether French fries are healthy or unhealthy, the paper asks a simpler question: Are we really evaluating the food itself, or are we also evaluating the image we have of that food? A small observation about French fries leads to a broader question about how our perceptions of food are formed.
