Jharkhand Digs Wealth, Others Build Growth
This opinion article examines Jharkhand's resource-rich economy and the state's continuing challenge of converting natural-resource wealth into manufacturing, employment, and broad-based economic development. Jharkhand possesses substantial deposits of coal, iron ore, copper, and bauxite. However, much of the economic value associated with these resources is generated outside the state. The article argues for a transition from an extraction-oriented development model towards local processing, manufacturing, and value addition. It highlights three broad priorities: strengthening industrial and digital infrastructure; improving the formalization, financing, and market access of small enterprises; and creating policy conditions that encourage processing and value addition within Jharkhand. The article argues that Jharkhand's development challenge is not simply to extract more resources but to ensure that more of the value generated from those resources translates into enterprises, employment, and economic opportunity within the state.
