How Much Does It Cost to Travel to Italy? Foreign Visitors' Spending per Night and per Trip by Origin, Lodging and Region, Prices and Airfares, from the Banca d'Italia Border Survey and Eurostat Data, 1999–2026
Estimates of the cost of a trip to Italy usually rest on sample itineraries. We use the official measurement instead: the Banca d'Italia border survey of travellers leaving Italy, which underlies the travel account of the balance of payments, together with Eurostat price and trip-expenditure data, ECB exchange rates and commercial airfare averages. Foreign overnight visitors spent EUR 139.1 (USD 157) per night in Italy in 2025, excluding the international fare, 2.6% more than in 2024, 32.6% more than in 2019 and 87.0% more than in 1999 in euros. Visitors from the United States spent EUR 178.1 per night, 28.0% above the average, over trips of 10.2 nights, or about USD 2,053 per trip. The type of lodging mattered more than the origin: a night in a hotel or holiday village came with EUR 206.8 of spending and a night in a rented home with EUR 97.1. Accommodation took 45.2% of foreign spending and restaurants 23.0%. Per night, the Aosta Valley (EUR 210.1) came to more than twice Molise (EUR 80.6), and four regions took 56.2% of all foreign spending. Italian hotel prices rose 39.7% between 2019 and 2025, about twice the 20.4% rise in consumer prices, and were 26.0% higher in September 2025 than in January. At an average round-trip fare of USD 937, the flight was 31.3% of an American's average trip. All inputs are public.
