How Much Does It Cost to Backpack Europe? Long-Trip Spending, a Hostel-and-Rail Cost Floor and Travel Price Levels from Eurostat, ECB and Price-List Data, 2012–2026
No official statistic measures what a backpacking trip through Europe costs. We approach the question from two sides. From Eurostat tourism-demand data, EU residents on personal trips abroad of 92 to 365 nights spent EUR 30.38 (USD 32.88) a night in 2024, against EUR 190.73 on trips of one to three nights, a ratio of 6.28; trips of 29 to 91 nights cost EUR 59.43 a night, up from EUR 36.00 in 2012. Because these averages include unpaid stays with friends and relatives, we also construct a cost floor for a traveller who pays for every bed and moves by train: the median European hostel dorm bed in 2026 (USD 34.49) plus an adult three-month Interrail Global Pass spread over its 90 days (USD 12.00) gives USD 46.49 a day before food, or USD 4,206.98 for 90 days including the EUR 20 ETIAS fee once that system operates. Across seven countries with published hostel averages the floor ranged from USD 46.42 a day in Spain to USD 85.34 in Switzerland. Eurostat price level indices for restaurants and accommodation in 2025 ranged from 48.3 in North Macedonia to 173.2 in Iceland (EU27 = 100). Harmonised consumer price indices show that EU prices for youth hostels, campsites and holiday centres rose 31.5% between 2019 and 2025, against 26.5% for all items, 8.9% for train fares and 40.0% for air fares. Dollar values use ECB annual average exchange rates. All inputs are public.
