How Much Does a Flight to Italy Cost? Round-Trip Fares, Ticket Taxes and Nonstop US–Italy Air Traffic from Fare-Search Snapshots and US DOT International Data, 1990–2026
Travellers and analysts often ask what a flight from the United States to Italy costs, yet published fare figures mix different statistics and rarely separate the fixed charges inside a ticket from the fare itself. We combine commercial fare-search snapshots taken in September 2026 with US Department of Transportation International Report data for 1990–2025 and the legal texts that set each tax and charge. Round trips from the US to Italy averaged USD 937 over the month to 25 September 2026. Monthly median fares ranged from USD 441 in November to USD 709 in June, and 12-month averages from USD 766 to Milan to USD 953 to Naples. Summing US federal taxes and fees, the US passenger facility charge, Italy's municipal boarding surcharge and airport charges converted at 1.1464 dollars per euro, a round trip returning from Rome Fiumicino carried USD 119.33 in taxes and charges and one returning from Milan Malpensa USD 103.36; the Rome total equalled 12.7% of the average fare. Nonstop traffic reached a record 5.83 million passengers in 2025, 30.1% above 2019 and 4.06 times the 1990 level, on 25,590 passenger flights. Rome Fiumicino handled 3.66 million passengers and 59.0% of passenger flights; Naples traffic grew 6.22-fold from 2019. Delta, United, American and ITA Airways carried 89.4% of passengers. Fare statistics from different parts of the search pages are reported separately and not combined.
