Wasted Winds and Enduring Blackouts: Deconstructing the Energy Paradox in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq
This study investigates the kinetic wind energy potential across the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI) and deconstructs the paradox between rich natural aerodynamic resources and persistent grid blackouts. Utilizing meteorological datasets and geographical flow patterns of the Zagros Mountain range, the paper examines how topographical acceleration—specifically the Venturi effect in mountain passes across Sulaymaniyah, Erbil, and Duhok—creates high-velocity wind corridors. Furthermore, it details how seasonal thermodynamic pressure differentials between the central Iraqi desert plains and northern Kurdish highlands generate sustained low-level jet streams during late summer and autumn. The research identifies key structural bottlenecks, including reliance on thermal fossil fuels, severe line transmission losses, and institutional underinvestment, while proposing an integrated policy roadmap for utility-scale wind farm integration to enhance regional power grid resilience
