Shekhawati Haveli Interiors and Mural Heritage a Comparative Case Study of Mandawa and Nawalgarh
Shekhawati painted havelis form a unique example of a domestic heritage landscape where architecture, interior and mural narration are a single cultural complex. This article explores how that cultural complex finds expression and transformation in the four selected cases of the havelis: Castle Mandawa and Murmuria Haveli in Mandawa, and Dr Ramnath A Podar Haveli Museum and Morarka Haveli in Nawalgarh. By using a qualitative, document-oriented case study research design, this paper makes comparative analyses of spatial layout, sequence of thresholds, use of courtyards, interior decoration, murals' thematic range, current function and conservation strategy. The paper proves that the haveli interior is not merely an interior with paintings; it derives its nature from the movement through different zones of accessibility, environmental functions of courtyards, social functions of semi-open galleries and painted surfaces which link religion, commerce, technology and family's high status. They are also different in terms of their paths of development. The transformation into museums allows for systematic interpretation and control over accessibility; the use of heritage hospitality allows for financing of further occupancy but will bring in more services and aesthetic uniformity; minimally interpreted monuments will ensure the immediacy of the object but will leave it prone to abandonment. The paper calls for a value-based conservation strategy which sees the mural paintings, architectural fabric, household practices and urban context as interconnected. Documentation, appropriate restoration, preventive conservation, advice for the owners, skilled artisans from the community and tourism are considered important issues.
