Bangladesh's Life Insurance Industry: The Challenges We Need to Talk About

This article discusses the key challenges facing Bangladesh’s life insurance industry, with particular attention to the people who work directly with customers and policyholders. The article highlights issues such as financial insecurity among field officers, limited development of new leadership, insufficient professional training, the lack of social and employment-related benefits, commission-based income pressure, and the declining attractiveness of insurance as a career for young people. It also discusses concerns surrounding claim settlement, customer trust, transparency, communication of policy benefits and bonuses, regulatory support, and the overall customer experience. The article considers how easier access to professional training, stronger manpower development, improved transparency, better customer service, and more supportive employment practices could contribute to a healthier and more sustainable insurance sector. The views presented in this article are based on the author’s professional observations and experience in the life insurance industry. They are intended to contribute to constructive discussion about the future development of Bangladesh’s life insurance sector and should not be considered an official statement of any organization.
