Problem‐Based Learning of Signals and Systems Through an Ultrasound Imaging Program
ABSTRACT Concepts in signals and systems (S&S) are highly theoretical and often difficult for students to learn through traditional lecture‐based instruction. Although problem‐based learning (PBL) has been widely adopted in engineering education, its application to S&S remains underexplored. This study presents a PBL approach that integrates multiple core S&S concepts within an ultrasound imaging application and explores its feasibility and students’ perceptions. A MATLAB‐based ultrasound imaging program was developed to guide students in adjusting signal‐processing parameters and generating B‐mode images. The project was implemented with 24 third‐year undergraduates and evaluated using an anonymous post‐intervention questionnaire and assessments of the resolution and contrast‐to‐noise ratio (CNR) of the images produced. Most participants reported perceiving a better understanding of key S&S concepts. Image assessments showed that students achieved good resolution more often than good CNR. Some students reported difficulty completing the project without deeper background knowledge, suggesting the importance of sufficient preliminary knowledge. Overall, students perceived the project as helpful for engaging with key S&S concepts, and its design may provide educators with a practical, transferable example for integrating real‐world signal‐processing problems into S&S instruction. These findings are exploratory and based mainly on self‐reported perceptions; effects on learning outcomes remain to be established in controlled studies with validated instruments.
