Computed tomography findings of a retroperitoneal chronic expanding hematoma with multiple hemangiomas: A case report and literature review

Chronic expanding hematoma (CEH) is an uncommon lesion that gradually increases in size over time. A hemangioma is a benign vascular tumor that may involve the skin, mucosa, or visceral organs; however, involvement of retroperitoneal organs is rare. Herein, we describe the case of a 56-year-old woman with a CEH adjacent to the right ovary and multiple congenital hemangiomas involving the skin, subcutaneous tissue, oral cavity, and liver. CEH was completely resected because it was suspected to be the cause of anemia and because an ovarian tumor or soft tissue sarcoma could not be excluded. In this patient, multiple hemangiomas demonstrated various enhancement patterns and calcifications on multiphasic contrast-enhanced computed tomography, and tumor size fluctuations were observed over an 8-year follow-up period. We discuss the imaging features of CEH in a patient with multiple congenital hemangiomas, with a brief review of the literature.
