A Student-Centered Model for Ethically Evaluating AI Integration in Learning Support Services and Beyond

As artificial intelligence (AI) reshapes higher education, learning support centers are uniquely positioned to intentionally assess whether if and how to best integrate AI tools into academic services. This session presents a 6-week project framework that was designed to: • Review the literature on critical AI literacy and training • Benchmark current best practices in AI policy, use, and integration alongside human-centered academic services • Examine student AI knowledge and use (needs assessment) • Identify and evaluate relevant AI tools or platforms The framework was developed within the Academic Success Center (ASC) at Nevada State University where Center peer educators (student employees) served as project leads and evaluators. This model offers a practical, research-informed pathway for institutions seeking to lead responsibly in AI-integrated learning support or other student services. Session activities include a walkthrough and discussion of the model structure, tools, challenges, and recommendations. Attendees will leave with: (1) a sample 6-week project roadmap, (2) a student-centered model for AI evaluation and pilot design, (3) learning frameworks grounded in critical AI literacy, (4) adaptable resources for assessment and decision-making, and (5) strategies for positioning students as co-creators in institutional/unit change
