Beyond the Model Letter: Rehearsing Decision-Making in OET Writing
This working paper proposes decision rehearsal as an instructional approach for Occupational English Test (OET) Writing. Learners compare progressively contrasting performances, explain how communicative decisions affect effectiveness, and reconstruct those decisions as exemplar support is withdrawn. The paper presents the OET Writing Frames as a practitioner-generated way to organise recurring teaching decisions, not as an alternative rating scale or a cognitive model of expert writers. It sets out a research agenda and treats transfer under changed task conditions as the empirical test of the approach. Examples from urgent-referral and discharge letters illustrate how decisions about purpose, evidence, relevance, chronology, treatment status, and reader action affect a letter. The proposal’s suitability for OET Writing has not yet been demonstrated empirically.
