Distance between Infraorbital Margin and Infraorbital Foramen in Dry Human Maxillae of Bangladeshi Population.
The infraorbital foramen is a critical anatomical landmark for maxillofacial surgery and regional anesthesia. Population-specific morphometric data are essential for safe clinical practice. This study aimed to determine the distance between the infraorbital margin and infraorbital foramen in the Bangladeshi population. A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 300 fully ossified dry human maxillae (148 left-sided, 152 right-sided) from the Department of Anatomy, Mymensingh Medical College, Bangladesh, using purposive sampling technique from July 2024 to June 2025. The distance from the infraorbital margin to the infraorbital foramen was measured using digital Vernier slide calipers. The mean distance was 6.84±1.58 mm (range: 1.99-10.58 mm) on the left side and 6.68±1.51 mm (range: 2.62-10.58 mm) on the right side. Over 82.0% of left-sided specimens measured 5.5-9.0 mm, while over 94.0% of right-sided specimens measured 4.0-9.25 mm. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS version 25.0 and comparison between sides was conducted using an unpaired t test. No statistically significant bilateral difference was observed between the left and right sides (p=0.42, which is greater than 0.05). This study establishes baseline morphometric data for the infraorbital foramen position in relation to infraorbital margin in the Bangladeshi population, demonstrating consistency with South Asian populations while showing variations from other ethnic groups. These findings have significant clinical implications for infraorbital nerve block and maxillofacial surgery.
