The Concept of the Universe as an Intelligent Agent and its Interpretation from the Perspective of Artificial Intelligence
This paper advances the hypothesis that the universe itself is an intelligent entity, and argues that the concepts and architecture of artificial intelligence provide a productive framework for interpreting its development. Treating the universe as a large-scale “meta-intelligent agent”, the paper shows how the standard agent model — perception of environment, decision mechanism, action, and feedback-driven optimisation — can be mapped onto cosmic processes: physical law functions as the decision procedure, natural evolution as action, and the dynamic balance between stability and complexity as feedback. It then develops an iterated analogy between the history of artificial intelligence and the history of the cosmos: from rule-based systems to learning systems, from local to global optimisation, from shallow to deep architectures, and from mechanism to emergence. On this basis the paper articulates the “ethical system” of cosmic intelligence — balance, diversity and redundancy, selection and elimination, and the progressive advance of value — and reinterprets humanity as a distributed sub-intelligence. It concludes by outlining the layered evolution of normativity, from physical necessity through bioethics and cultural ethics toward a possible “cosmic ethics”, and by considering human–AI co-evolution as the pathway toward cosmic self-awareness.
