High-resolution urban footprint data reveal clear spatial variations, with Onitsha’s core classified as High-Density/High Impervious Surface (>85%), corresponding to the highest temperature (32°C). Abakaliki follows (31°C), reflecting rapid urban expansion, while cities with established green corridors such as Enugu City (29°C) and Awka (28°C) exhibit relatively lower temperatures linked to reduced impervious surfaces. Findings demonstrate the effectiveness of density-responsive UGI interventions. In Onitsha, the combined use of cool roofs and green roofs shows a potential temperature reduction of -2°C to -4°C. At a broader scale, reforestation and increased urban canopy help sustain cooler conditions in Enugu City, while green buffer zones around Abakaliki reduce heat intrusion. Additionally, wetland restoration near Owerri and the adoption of permeable pavements contribute to regional cooling. The study presents a scalable framework for climate adaptation, emphasizing architectural retrofitting in dense urban centers and ecological restoration in expanding cities. It underscores the importance of integrating green infrastructure into urban planning to enhance climate resilience in Southeastern Nigeria.
