Understanding substance abuse among Secondary School learners in Capricorn District, Limpopo Province, South Africa: A Qualitative Exploration of Teachers' Perceptions
This qualitative study explores secondary school teachers' perceptions of substance abuse among learners in the Capricorn District, Limpopo Province, South Africa. The study aimed to gain insight into teachers' experiences and perceptions of substance abuse, including its causes, impact, and support strategies. Using a qualitative research design, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 23 teachers selected through purposive sampling. The findings primarily reveal teachers’ perceptions of the causes and contributing factors of substance abuse, including family and environmental influences, mental health challenges, lack of parental involvement, and accessibility of substances. The study highlights the complexity of substance abuse in schools and underscores the need for further research on its impacts and the development of effective interventions and support strategies. The study's results can inform policy and practice aimed at addressing substance abuse among secondary school learners.
