Impacts of Corporate Social Responsibility on Employee Motivation

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is increasingly recognised as an important dimension of organisational practice, with implications extending beyond corporate reputation and financial performance. Although CSR has traditionally been examined through an organisational perspective, growing attention has been directed towards understanding how socially responsible practices influence employees and their experiences within the workplace. This systematic literature review explores the relationship between CSR and employee motivation by examining and synthesising existing academic research. It considers how organisational engagement in socially responsible activities may shape employees' attitudes towards their employers, including their motivation, job satisfaction, commitment and sense of purpose at work. The review also explores how individual circumstances, including educational background and employment opportunities, may influence employees' responses to CSR initiatives. By examining the connections between responsible business practices, employee experiences and organisational outcomes, the study brings together relevant scholarly perspectives on the role of CSR within Human Resource Management. It further considers the potential contribution of employee-centred CSR to organisational performance and identifies areas warranting additional academic investigation. The research offers a consolidated perspective on CSR and employee motivation, highlighting the importance of considering employees as stakeholders when evaluating the wider implications of organisational social responsibility. Research provenance: Originally undertaken in 2022 as part of the MSc Human Resource Management programme at the University of Birmingham, Birmingham Business School. Prepared for independent public dissemination in 2026.
