The Price of Being One: Structural Readings of Six Ancient Questions

Some of the oldest questions human beings ask are not questions about existence as such but questions about a particular way of existing — existing as a composite, integrated, self-assessing thing. This paper argues that such questions have structural content, and reads six of them through Coupling Geometry's deepest layer: the individuation reading, under which coupling measures the degree to which there is a system at all, and the conjectured bound under which integration and self-transparency trade against each other. Six readings follow. Self-opacity is constitutive of selfhood: any sufficiently integrated system has an unconscious by necessity. The Other is a geometric requirement, not a sentiment: self-knowledge needs a channel outside the self's own field. Death functions as the anti-ratchet — the scheduled decoupling that prevents the permanent capture of life by its incumbents — and what persists is installed structure. Freedom is a position-indexed variable, real below the threshold and vanishing above it, with knowledge of the structure itself acting as a lever. Meaning is constitutive coupling: the framework can say what it is and why its loss presents as collapse, and cannot say which meaning. And the sacred is read by function alone — the undominated channel every civilisation builds — with its referent explicitly beyond the framework's reach. Each reading is labelled derived or illuminative; several carry empirical corollaries already staked elsewhere in the corpus. The paper's boundary — origins, experience, and the far end of the channel — is stated first and last, because the reach here is earned by the refusals. The analysis adds no scored data; the civilisational core stands independently of every claim in it.
