Serendipity in a Bacteriology Laboratory—Incidental Detection of Pneumocystis jirovecii by Gram Stain: A Case Report
Gram stain remains one of the frequently used stains in the microbiology laboratory. However, its use has been restricted to identifying bacteria.Meticulous microscopy may lead to unexpected detection of fungal pathogens like Pneumocystis jirovecii that may be otherwise missed or dismissed as artifact while observing the Gram stain.Conventional Gram stain while still facing its limitations may still serve in diagnosing a life-threatening disease when index of suspicions is low.
