The AI Boom Is Not a Simple Replay of 2000

This research note examines whether the current AI investment cycle is a simple replay of the 2000 dot-com bubble. It argues that substantial existing cash generation and real commercial demand distinguish much of today’s AI buildout from the most speculative parts of the dot-com era, while emphasizing that genuine technology adoption can still lead to overinvestment. The note focuses on capital allocation, infrastructure financing, cash-flow quality, and the risk that capacity expansion may outpace economically productive demand.

Abstract

This research note examines whether the current AI investment cycle is a simple replay of the 2000 dot-com bubble. It argues that substantial existing cash generation and real commercial demand distinguish much of today’s AI buildout from the most speculative parts of the dot-com era, while emphasizing that genuine technology adoption can still lead to overinvestment. The note focuses on capital allocation, infrastructure financing, cash-flow quality, and the risk that capacity expansion may outpace economically productive demand.
