The evolution of the European Society of Breast Imaging (EUSOBI) into a leading radiological society

Abstract The European Society of Breast Imaging (EUSOBI) began in 1997 as a small initiative and has grown steadily with 2,750 members from 98 countries in 2026. Today, EUSOBI ranks among the three largest radiological subspecialty societies in Europe. In this article, we trace the development of EUSOBI from 1997 to 2026, highlighting its expansion in membership, educational activities, and academic output. The society oversees numerous statutory committees, task forces, a social media panel and organizes multiple educational courses in addition to its annual congress. Furthermore, EUSOBI publishes a wide range of recommendations, patient information materials, guidelines, and surveys. This development reflects the long-term commitment, vision, and engagement of its members, supported by the contributions of the EUSOBI office team. The recent launch of a dedicated scientific journal in collaboration with the European Society of Radiology (ESR), further underscores EUSOBI´s academic maturity and international relevance. Key Points Question There is an unmet need for greater visibility of EUSOBI’s history. Findings The article reports on the development of EUSOBI from 1996 to 2026, highlighting its expansion in membership, educational activities, and academic output. Relevance statement Witnessing the successful development of EUSOBI and its expansion in membership, educational activities, and academic output underscores the value of this radiological society.
