Challenges Faced by Transgender Persons in Accessing Employment in Galle District, Sri Lanka: A Qualitative Study

Background: Transgender persons may experience social, educational, family and organisational barriers that affect access to employment. Although equality and non-discrimination are increasingly recognised, legal recognition does not necessarily ensure equality in everyday employment. Objective: This study aims to explore the challenges faced by transgender persons in accessing employment in Galle District, Sri Lanka. Methods: A qualitative exploratory design will be used. Twenty-five transgender persons from Galle District will be selected using purposive sampling. Data will be collected through in-depth interviews and analysed thematically. Ethical principles of informed consent, confidentiality, anonymity and voluntary participation will be maintained. Results: The study focuses on participants’ lived experiences of employment access, including social attitudes, educational barriers, family support or rejection, transphobia, awareness, gender sensitivity and organisational practices. Accessibility to jobs despite gender identity is bleak particularly in smaller organizations in comparison to larger organizations. Conclusion: Understanding the lived employment experiences of transgender persons is important for developing inclusive employment policies and practices in Sri Lanka.
