A Scoping Review of Interventions for Problematic Digital Media Use among Nursing Students: An Analysis Based on the Information-Motivation-Behavioral Skills Model
Purpose: This scoping review aimed to describe the characteristics of intervention studies addressing problematic digital media use among nursing students and to map their components using the Information-Motivation-Behavioral Skills (IMB) model as an analytical framework. Methods: Following Arksey and O'Malley's framework, seven databases were searched without restrictions on publication year, and additional studies were identified through hand searching. A total of eleven studies were included, and data were charted and synthesized using descriptive analysis alongside the IMB framework. Results: The studies were published between 2015 and 2026, with ten published from 2023 onward. Interventions were categorized into information-focused educational programs (n=4), a motivation-focused counseling-based behavior change program (n=1), and behavioral skills-focused programs (n=6). Most interventions incorporated multiple IMB components, although one component was often emphasized. There was considerable variation in study design, delivery mode, duration, outcome variables, measurement instruments, and follow-up assessments. Behavioral skills identified across the interventions included self-regulation, coping strategies, mindfulness, cognitive restructuring, time management, action planning, and relapse prevention. Conclusion: Future studies should develop integrated interventions that incorporate IMB components and are reflective of the academic and clinical practicum contexts of nursing students. Additionally, standardized measurement instruments should be used, and long-term follow-up assessments should be conducted.
