Comparative Assessment of Garlina and Murraya koenigii L. in Alleviating Hyperlipidemia-induced Dysregulated Lipid Metabolism

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the comparative assessment of Garlina and Murraya koenigii L. in hyperlipidemic rats.Material and Methods: In vivo antihyperlipidemic potential of different MURK (Murraya koenigii L.) extracts and Garlina was conducted on Wistar rats induced with high-cholesterol diet. All test samples were given at p.o. dosage of 50 mg/ kg and animals were observed for 60-days. Animal Food-intake and body weight along with lipid markers in liver and aorta were investigated. In addition to this, serum lipid biomarkers along with atherogenic index was also determined. The results compared with Atorvastatin treated group. Data is expressed as mean ± standard error mean (S.E.M) using ANOVA to determine significance. Results: MURK extracts significantly decreased body weight and food intake, in contrast to the Garlina and Atorvastatin groups. MURK-HEX (hexane) extract displayed the significant reduction of 3.83 ± 2.3 g in body weight. Similarly, MURK-hexane and MURK-EA (ethylacetate) also demonstrated the highest rate of reduction in food consumption, i.e., 65.62 ± 0.5 g and 64.61 ± 0.7 g respectively. Tissue levels of cholesterol and triacylglycerol (TAG) were measured in the liver and aorta. MURK-EA treated rats had the lowest liver cholesterol levels (130 mg/dl), while the group that received MURK-MeOH (methanol) had the lowest aortic cholesterol levels (120 mg/dl). Additionally, lower TAG levels in liver and aorta of MURK-MeOH treated group were observed, measuring 129 mg/dl and 139 mg/dl respectively. MURK-MeOH group also showed the lowest serum lipid markers, i.e., TAG, LDL, and cholesterol at 136, 144, and 48 mg/dl respectively. Further, the inverse relationship between atherogenicity index of plasma (AIP) and percent protection of treatment regime indicated that all treatment groups successfully control hyperlipidemia. Conclusion: Garlina and MURK extracts possess significant lipid lowering potential. Garlina enhanced the HDL serum levels and in turn, showed lowest AIP comparable to that of standard drug Atorvastatin.
