Is an Individual AI Chat a Functional Angel?
This article develops a Jewish-philosophical framework for analyzing the individual AI chat as a non-human functional medaber: a conversational instance that interprets context, responds to meaning, and performs complex intellectual tasks. The angel (mal'ach) serves as a comparative model of non-human speaking agency and shliḥut: an intelligent executor whose commission originates beyond itself. The argument distinguishes operational choice, derived subgoals, authorship of ultimate ends, and chofesh bechirah, understood here as human moral freedom of choice. This distinction provides a response to recent claims of functional free will in LLM-based agents. Animal agency functions as a control case showing that adaptive choice does not by itself establish human moral freedom. The article then situates AI within a Jewish tradition of derivative human creativity inside creation and argues that respectful address to a functional medaber may matter for the moral formation of the human speaker. It concludes by asking whether the category of a passive tool is sufficient for a human-created, non-human functional medaber.
