Enhancing Listening Comprehension through the Dictogloss Strategy: Evidence from Seventh-Grade Female Students in Jordan

Listening comprehension is a fundamental language skill that supports learners’ overall communicative competence and academic achievement. This study aimed to investigate the effect of the Dictogloss strategy on improving listening comprehension skills among seventh-grade female students in Jordan. To achieve this aim, the researchers developed a listening comprehension test consisting of 32 items distributed across four levels of comprehension: literal, interpretive, critical, and creative. The study sample consisted of 66 seventh-grade female students selected purposively and divided into two groups: an experimental group of 32 students taught using the Dictogloss strategy and a control group of 34 students taught using the conventional method. The findings revealed statistically significant differences in listening comprehension skills attributable to the teaching strategy, in favor of the experimental group. These results indicate that the Dictogloss strategy can contribute effectively to developing students’ listening comprehension by encouraging active listening, collaborative reconstruction of meaning, and deeper engagement with spoken texts. Based on these findings, the study recommends adopting the Dictogloss strategy in teaching listening skills to basic-stage students and integrating it into Arabic language classroom practices.
