Nordic Roots, European Networks: Jamedia production Builds Connections between Finland and Ireland
This professional article examines how Helsinki-based Jamedia production, founded in 2003 by Finnish producer, writer and director Anna Blom, is extending its international work towards Ireland and a wider European production network. The article traces how Blom's participation in SERIES' WOMEN, the Erich Pommer Institut's leadership programme for female drama series producers, and in Kudos³, Aalto University's audiovisual business development and advisory programme, helped turn an emerging interest in the Irish screen industry into a more systematic internationalisation strategy. Through tailored advising and strategic sparring, Irish industry organisations, regional film offices and potential partners were mapped. Together with Helsinki-based producer Mia Palmgren, Blom then used a future-oriented mapping exercise and a two-year roadmap to translate longer-term aims into practical steps. The article suggests that for a producer working from a small Nordic market, internationalisation is less a matter of attaching a foreign partner to a single production than of cultivating trust-based professional relationships through which feature film, drama, animation and children's content can move across Finnish, Irish and European production and financing environments.Kudos³ audiovisual business development and advisory programme is part of Aalto University's Digital Creative Industries and Beyond (DCIB) project, co-funded by the European Union (European Regional Development Fund), Helsinki-Uusimaa Regional Council and Aalto University.
