Tight Paths On Tilings And Surfaces

We look for the ‘straightest’ paths on regular tilings of the hyperbolic plane, and use them to find special cyclic words representing the conjugacy classes in surface groups, and to compute geometric intersection numbers of curves on closed surfaces.
