Conceptualizing and Measuring Student Engagement in Higher Education: Theoretical Frameworks, Contextual Dynamics, and Measurement Imperatives

Student engagement is commonly viewed as a multidimensional construct associated with learning, persistence, and academic success. This conceptual paper examines how student engagement has been defined and measured in higher education. Drawing on multiple perspectives, it discusses conceptual ambiguities and limitations in existing measurement tools, including reliance on self-report data and differences in the dimensions, contexts, and learning settings captured by existing measures, including the challenges of assessing engagement in digital environments. The paper proposes a framework connecting internal student factors and external contextual factors with behavioral, cognitive, emotional, and sociocultural engagement. It suggests that future measurement tools may benefit from integrating these dimensions and considering the varied contexts in which learning occurs. The proposed framework is intended to provide a basis for further scale development and empirical examination rather than a validated model.
